The UNICEF Regional Education Advisor, Abhiyan Jung Rana based in the Southern Africa Regional Office in Kenya visited Zambia in June 2022. During his mission he also took time to visit Catch-Up classes at two schools in Lusaka Province. The schools implementing Catch Up are Timothy Mwanakatwe Primary School in the urban low-income suburb of Mandebvu.

Mr. Abhiyan Jung Rana observed literacy and numeracy classes and was impressed with the interaction among the learners and between the learners and the teacher. He was particularly impressed with the Special Education Class at Timothy Mwanakatwe Primary School where the Catch-Up methodology was being used to teach special needs pupils, ensuring they were all engaged in interactive learning. At Justin Kabwe Combined School the visiting delegation was happy to find that management and teachers have adapted the Catch-Up methodology model to structure and conduct their remedial programme for all the grades, from 1 to 12.

UNICEF is one of the key partners working with VVOBTaRL Africa and the Ministry of Education to roll out the Catch-Up programme in Eastern and Southern provinces, and more recently in Luapula Province, with financial support from Hempel Foundation.
